A bold, striking building that is unconventional yet elegant and fitting for the community.
The retail building helps foster community engagement by emphasizing the building as vibrant hub for residents and visitors alike, promoting a sense of belonging within the urban landscape. The design offers pathways for pedestrian access, as an emphasized canopy creates a walkable, and welcoming connection with the community and becoming a natural part of the neighborhood. By incorporating biophilic design, and creating terrace (multi-use) spaces, the retail center encourages a connection to nature as well tenants and customers a renewed feeling promoting health and well being. From a far, the building reaches out welcomes you visually with compelling architectural volumes, while creating views of downtown as a large sweeping canopy on the roof terrace helps frame site lines towards downtown.
The design concept drew inspiration from the surrounding urban context, taking into consideration the existing architectural fabric and cultural heritage of the area. By blending modern aesthetics with elements that reflect the local environment, the building integrates with the historical context that the heights is known for while becoming transformative and new, standing out from the conventional.
The South facing terrace has framed views of downtown and is stepped in plan (carved into the building) and louvers both orient views and provide shading to help with solar heat gain. Framed views and terrace spaces create overall positive vibes, and the private terrace gives opportunity for staff and customers to connect with the outside
An open-air roof deck captures stunning panoramic views of downtown Houston cityscape, and the canopy helps to reinforce the site lines. The roof terrace serves as multi-use for not only customers and working staff throughout the day but is designed to be rentable to company and corporate events.
The design concept aimed to challenge traditional design norms and push the boundaries of conventional architecture seen in Houston. Through innovative and unconventional design elements, such as dynamic forms, geometric shapes, and expressive features, the building stands out as a symbol of creativity and originality in the urban landscape which is inspired by the essence, the history, the culture, the location, and the optimism about the Height’s future. The design captures the rich history and future vision of the neighborhood by creating a bold identity.
